The Juventus Turin has rejoined the influential European Club Association (ECA), which left to launch the failed European Super League project, ECA announced on Thursday during its general meeting in Athens.
“I am happy to welcome Juventus to our family. From now on, all elite clubs from more than twenty countries are members of the ECA,” declared the president of the organization, Nasser Al-Khelaïfimentioned in the press release of ECA, also president of the Paris Saint-Germain club.
Juve, under the direction of Andrea Agnelli, its president until 2023, is one of the twelve clubs, along with Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Manchester United, that launched the Super League in April 2021. This semi-closed league project, which competes with the Champions League, was on the verge of the collapse of European football before being quickly buried due, in particular, to the opposition of fans of English clubs and threats from UEFA and of FIFA.
But the project was relaunched this winter following the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in December 2023 that considered the ban of the Super League contrary to European law. The promoter of the European Super League, A22 Sports Management, is working on a wider competition project, open to 64 clubs divided into three leagues.
