Former Alicante tennis player David Ferrer has been appointed as the new tournament director for the Davis Cup Finals, replacing Albert Costa from Lleida, who has held the position since 2019, as reported on Tuesday by Kosmos, the competition organizer and company chaired by the footballer Gerard Pique. In addition, Francisco ‘Pato’ Clavet of Madrid rejoins Kosmos as Deputy Tournament Director to support the league department.

Ferrer, who became the third player in the world and retired after playing the Madrid Masters in 2019, played a whopping 20 Davis Cup qualifiers with the Spanish team and won the Silver Salad Bowl three times. “I am very excited to participate in the project. The Davis is a unique match. As a player, it is one of the great tournaments that you always want to play because of what it means. You fight as a team, defend your country’s colours, live with your teammates for a week and the atmosphere in the stands is incredible,” explains the man from Jávea.

“This year will be another big challenge. The new format that started in 2019 has been adapted every season with the aim of improving and adapting to the needs of players, fans and sponsors. With my experience, my big goal is to make this edition of the Davis Cup a great success,” said Ferrer.

A total of 16 teams will take part in the group stage this year, which will be held from September 13 to 18 at four locations: Bologna, Glasgow, Hamburg and Valencia. The top two teams from each location will automatically qualify for the final in Malaga on November 22-27.
