More than two million refugees worldwide will need permanent new shelter in the coming year, according to an estimate by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). They cannot return to their homes because of persecution, conflict or other crises, nor can they remain in the countries where they have found temporary refuge, a UNHCR spokeswoman said.
According to these figures, 1.47 million people will need a new home abroad this year. Most resettlements are needed from African countries, the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, the spokeswoman said. The most important group are Syrians, followed by refugees from Afghanistan.
These are people who are particularly persecuted or in need of special care that cannot be provided in the countries of first refuge.
Little chance of new life
But the chance that people can start a new life is small. According to UNHCR, only 39,000 resettlement places were offered last year. The United States and Canada are among the countries that permanently host the largest number of refugees.
