Significant damage – South of France: hailstones the size of tennis balls

Severe storms with hail and storms caused significant damage in southwestern France on Tuesday night. Thousands of people were without power, roofs were damaged and buildings were flooded. The fire brigade has been deployed about 900 times in the region.

About 30 people came to the emergency room. In a village in the region, a holiday camp with 126 students and 28 teachers had to be evacuated, leaving two children with minor injuries.

Significant damage is also feared in viticulture and agriculture. Images of cars dented by the hail are circulating on social media. According to the weather service Météo France, some hailstones had a diameter of seven centimeters, so about the size of tennis balls. Wind speeds of up to 113 kilometers per hour were measured.

Further storms are now feared in the southwest and in the Massif Central, the weather service said, which issued the orange warning level for 27 departments. Severe thunderstorms with hail and heavy rain and strong winds threatened.
