Catalonia stands by and will propose a single candidacy in the COE

The Generalitat of Catalunya stands and proposes to Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) a solo candidacy for Winter Olympicsafter the failure of the project in Aragon where the Government directly blaming the “anti-Catalanism” of the president of that community, Javier Lamban.

After six months of negotiations, everyone indicates that the project will be avoided, even without closing the open channels of dialogue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is thinking about future editions.

At a press conference after the weekly meeting of the Catalan government, the spokesman of the Generalitat, Patrícia Plaja, complained that “anti-Catalanism has won” and that “the real obstacle for the joint candidacy is the president of Aragon ”.

Plaja defended that Catalonia worked “from the first moment” to present a project that was “probably a win”, but accused Lambán of “not wanting to partner with Catalonia” and Moncloa of “allowing him all his exit from the tone and ended up bowing to their demands ”.

“Lambán has ended up staying away from it and it has become impossible for this joint candidacy to move forward,” the spokesperson said. “It is ensured that a good candidacy is not pursued and that Aragón can now be part of a winning candidacy, after many failed attempts” Jaca said.

The Generalitat remains convinced that a candidacy can be presented for 2030 (“2034 is far away”, it is affirmed), although this leaves room for the Spanish Committee to make a decision on the matter; on the other hand, it was confirmed that the citizen consultation in the Pyrenees is “parked” for now.

Plaja also lamented the Government’s attitude towards Lambán. “No one from the Government, starting with Minister Miquel Iceta and ending with President Pedro Sánchez, has spoken of meaning to Lambán.
