Francis Roigwho has been part of Rafael Nadal’s coaching staff for 17 years, He stopped being the coach of Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettininumber 41 in the ranking, after he was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 in Vienna against Russian Karen Khachanov.
“I want to inform you that Francisco Roig and I have decided to sever our professional relationship”reported the Roman tennis player on Instagram, finishing a job that started less than a year ago, in December 2023.
“I can only thank you for all the work done this year, the commitment and the results obtained. It was a professional experience that grew him immensely, both on and off the field. I wish him the best for the future and good luck,” added the 28-year-old.
Berrettini, under Roig, won three ATP 250 titles this season: Marrakech, Gstaad and Kitzbühel. This week he will compete in the Paris Masters 1,000, where he will face Australian Alexei Popyrin (25) in the first round.
Roig, for his part, was with Nadal from 2005 to 2022he left Manacorí to devote himself to his own academy before becoming Berrettini’s second career coach at the end of last year, having until then been with the Italian Vincenzo Santopadre from the beginning of his career.
Before starting to work with Roig, the Italian tennis player admitted that he went through a moment of depression after missing the most important events due to a series of injuries that prevented him from getting into the rhythm of the competition.
In fact, Berrettini, one of the most important figures in Italian tennis in recent years, missed the Davis Cup that Italy won because of discomfort.
