Manchester United did not raise its head. It’s the fourteenth after 9 days and still haven’t found a version that matches the squad level it has. This Sunday they lost to Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham (2-1) due to a controversial penalty in the final stretch by De Ligt on Ings.
At first, the English referee David Coote did not indicate anything, but they called him from VAR and he went to review the game. After a few minutes and with a lot of doubt, he gave the penalty. It was an ambiguous action, one that De Ligt protested vehemently and where the attacker’s former handball was claimed before the infringement.
In a press conference, Ten Hag blasted the referee’s decision: On three occasions this season we felt we were unfair. “The way we received the penalty was unfair and unjust. I spoke to the referees, but the decision has been made. There is no going back. It has a big impact on our team, on our results and on our position in table,” he told the BBC.
The Premier League statement
The referee’s decision raised so much controversy, with it being unclear what the call was, that the Premier explained the decision in a statement. “The referee did not call a penalty in favor of West Ham for a foul by De Ligt on Ings.” The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact with Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review. “The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”
