Inter Milan had to beat Venezia this Sunday to take advantage of Naples’ (0-3) loss against Atalanta. They had more trouble than expected to win, but the reigning champions are back in the mix, not a game behind the Neapolitans. They are the favorites and they face that pressure. They won 1-0 with a goal from Lautaro Martínez and are two points behind the lead.
Unlike most teams, Venezia showed that they have more football than points. He was planted at San Siro without any kind of complications. A recently promoted man looking into the eyes of the current champion. Long live football! A meeting where Inter fans got a good look at the drama going on in Valencia because of DANA.
The first half was an exchange of chances. On the Inter side, Lautaro Martínez had a clear shot that went over the crossbar. The Albiceleste star is still warming up his engines, very active throughout the game. Marcus Thuram also participates, as diligent as he is lost in his meaning and his decision-making. Stankovic made the goal seem smaller than it actually was.
Like Yan Sommer messing up a play where he shot into an empty goal and emulating Casillas’ legendary save at Sánchez Pizjuán with an impossible hand.
Lautaro Martínez always appears and last fear
Great teams always have another tool in the room. Venezia seemed to control Inter and the ‘bull’ Martínez, but the talent was unstoppable.
As soon as the second act began, Mkhitaryan scored on a shooting play that ended with the first touch after assisting Dimarco’s penalty spot. VAR saved Di Francesco’s team.
In the moments that followed it was Stankovic who kept his team alive. Until Dimarco, a dagger from the left, played it to music at the far post for Lautaro to take the hammer out of his head to score a goal (65′).
Five minutes later, Lautaro, Barella, Bastoni and Dimarco left the field to start thinking about the great Champions League game against Arsenal. Çalhanoglu is back from injury. What hasn’t changed is the rhythm. Inter took the lead and until the last second they chased the rival goal in search of the second.
They didn’t score it and on the last play of the game they had a huge scare. Sverko scored by going past Bisseck on the jump. They went wild in celebration and the Inter players were depressed, but VAR came to their rescue when it was determined that they had touched the ball with their arm in the shot.
