Mason Greenwood appeared at the right moment, on the hour mark, to avoid the clash at the Beaujoire stadium against Nantes and lead Marseille to victory (1-2), bursting into second place in French Ligue 1 completing tenth match day, just behind Paris Saint Germain.
Italian Roberto de Zerbi’s team did not waste the defeat against Monaco and Lille, who are ahead of them in the table. No one wins. And the Marseille team, which had only one victory in four games, again added three points and rose two places in the standings.
Marseille took the lead in the 24th minute with a precise cross from the left by Jonathan Rowe that Neal Maupay headed into the net. But Nantes, forced into relegation, now seven games without a win, made it six before the break.
Marcus Coco sends the ball into the area from the right. Zimbabwean Tino Kadewere came from behind, got his finger in and beat Argentine Gerónimo Rulli to level the match.
It was on the hour mark when Greenwood appeared to break the score. The pass is from Luis Henrique. The former Getafe player made space for himself and from the half-moon he fired a low shot, near the left post, that beat Alban Lafont.
Greenwood was once again decisive. He has seven goals and one assist in Ligue 1. He is the second highest scorer in the competition, one goal less than Paris Saint Germain attacker Bradley Barcola.
Marseille burst into second place, ahead thanks to Monaco’s goal difference and two points above Lille, fourth, and six behind the leader, Paris Saint Germain.
Nantes is fourteenth with ten points. Same as penultimate, Saint Etienne, and only one more than penultimate, LE Havre.
