Cliftonville reminded fans of the spectators’ behavior ahead of tonight’s Irish Cup semi-final match against the Crusaders.
Big fans are expected to take part in a huge derby match in North Belfast at Windsor Park, where a seat will be won in the May final.
The Reds posted a statement on their website on Friday morning to remind fans “Respect everyone in the game” and follow the court rules.
It came after the club were fined £50 worth of £1,250 after being accused of spectator misconduct in the BetMcLean League Cup final, and finalist Coleraine was also fined 750,750 for breaching Section 33.3 of the Irish Football Association’s Disciplinary Code.
At the time it was reported that both Cliftonville and Coleraine had reported “sectarian chants” to FIFA from their supporters in the final. As is known, several bombs and fireworks were detonated in the back of Cliftonville Stadium.
The Reds claimed the “acts of minority participants” in the League Cup final “contaminated our club” and warned those who repeat these scenes that they “do not want” to play in the Irish Cup semi-final on Friday.
“As Cliftonville Football Club looks forward to the semi-finals of the Samuel Gilston Irish Whiskey Cup against the Crusaders at Windsor Park, we would like to remind all in attendance that while we greatly appreciate your support, it is important to honor that support in the game and adhere to the Court Rules,” the statement read. .
“It was frustrating that there was a minority in the last League Cup final whose behavior had harmed our club. Despite the pre-match warning, especially regarding the use of fireworks, some still chose to wear them, much to the chagrin of many, and had nothing to do with Cliftonville FC. or football.
If you intend to participate in any of these activities, when you say you’re a Cliftonville fan, make no mistake, you are not and your presence is unwelcome in today’s game.
As in the League Cup Final, Cliftonville FC had no control over how tickets for tonight’s game were distributed, and we had no information about the safety, management or security plan.
However, the club will undoubtedly remain liable if similar behavior is repeated, as was the case due to incidents in the League Cup final, when the club was heavily fined.
“Everyone in Cliftonville, especially our players, wants Reds fans to sing loudly and proudly the Cliftonville songs. So come back to the squad tonight and make sure everyone enjoys the occasion.”
