The French Benjamin Bonziwho came to the Metz tournament without any success on the ATP circuit this season and had to compete in the qualifying phase, won the first title of his career after defeating the British in the final Cameron Norrie of 7-6(6) and 6-4.
The player from Nimes, 28 years old and 124th in the world rankings, started his journey in the event with six defeats in the six circuit competitions he participated. No fight is won.
The Frenchman, who won his first matches in Metz, four, along with Spaniard Roberto Bautista, from the 2024 tour, unexpectedly finds himself in the third final of his career after Marseille and Pune in 2023 ended in defeat.
But Benjamin Bonzi remained inspired and motivated until the end and won the final duel against Cameron Norrie, 29, who became the eighth in the world in 2022, months after winning the most important title of his career in Indian Wells.
The Johannesburg-born British is playing in his fifteenth finals although his last title was in Rio de Janeiro in 2023 when he played in his last finals, in Buenos Aires and Auckland.
In an unprecedented rivalry, Bonzi won the match in the first set, which was decided in a tiebreaker. He took advantage of the fall of the British, who accused him of losing in the preliminary round. He sealed the first title of his career in one hour and 55 minutes.
