Resort shock: hate attacks on migrant food suppliers

Date:

Since Friday evening, there have been four suspected racially motivated attacks on foreign food suppliers in the Croatian coastal city of Split. All four attacks followed each other in quick succession, the police announced on Saturday.

First, a 41-year-old delivery driver was attacked late Friday evening. The migrant and an attacker were slightly injured.

The police subsequently arrested four men suspected of having committed the crime for racist reasons.

A migrant seriously injured
Shortly afterwards, three more attacks took place. A migrant from Nepal was seriously injured. Another victim is from India. The countries of origin of the other food suppliers attacked have not been disclosed. The perpetrators are on the run, police said.

High share of foreigners in Split
Croatia, a country of 3.8 million inhabitants, is becoming increasingly dependent on foreign workers due to high emigration rates and a shrinking population. In addition to seasonal workers from surrounding Balkan states, more and more migrant workers from countries such as Nepal, India and the Philippines are also coming to Croatia to work in the construction or tourism sector.

In 2023, Croatia issued almost 120,000 work permits to migrants from non-EU countries, an increase of 40 percent compared to the previous year. This year, 150,000 work visas had already been issued for migrants from other EU countries by November.

In the capital Zagreb, police noticed a growing number of attacks on migrant workers, especially food delivery workers, at the beginning of this year. However, these were usually robberies and were not racially motivated.
