Bayern’s leadership crisis ends with a renewal

Date:

Bayern Munich today announced the contract renewal of Jan-Christian Dreesen as CEO for two more years, until June 2027. The decision was adopted unanimously by the Bavarian club’s powerful supervisory board.

“Dreesen took over as chairman of the board during a difficult period and quickly returned Bayern Munich to calmer waters. We want to continue on this path together. We are confident that he is the right person to face the challenges in future with his colleagues in the advice of the board Michael Diederich and Max Eberl”, ensures Herbert Hainer, club president, in the statement.

From ‘dismissed’ to renewed

Dreesen’s renewal as CEO of Bayern rejecting information from three weeks ago, on the eve of the team’s visit Vincent Kompany against Barcelona in the Champions League (4-1), pointing to his departure after revealing an incident that happened to him three years ago with a former employee of the club whom he insulted by throwing him a magazine .

Dreesen joined Bayern from the banking sector in February 2013 as chief financial officer and was promoted to vice-chairman of the supervisory board in 2014 before taking on the duties of CEO replacement Oliver Kahn last year.

The revolution of May 2023

Bayern fired Kahn and to sports director Hasan Salihamidžić in May 2023, the same day they won their 11th straight Bundesliga. The latter was replaced Christopher Freund and then too Michael Diedrich appointed as financial director. Max Eberl He arrived as general director of sports in February 2024.

With Dreesen as CEO, last season the Bavarian team missed out on the title for the first time since 2012 by surrendering its hegemony to Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso.

This season, with the arrival of Kompany on the bench, started in a promising way. Bayern lead the Bundesliga with a 5-point lead and remain unbeaten after the first 12 rounds.
