Samu Aghehowa is one of Luis de la Fuente’s new additions for Spain’s matches against Denmark and Switzerland in the Nations Leaguewhere the 20-year-old forward from Porto dreams of playing his first minutes in the senior team and dedicating them to his mother, Edithfor her efforts to leave Nigeria to give her children a better life.
“He suffered a lot, the whole step of leaving his country in Spain so that my sister could have a better life. Many hardships, many times I remember. Everything I do is for him, to make him proud of me. She is the most important woman in my life, she helps me all the time. It has a major role, it is the pillar of my life, without it I don’t know what I would do,” said Samu after experiencing his first moments with the Spanish team.
Edith, pregnant with Samu, decides to leave Nigeria and travels from the Gulf of Guinea to Melilla. A few years later, he was proud of the steps his son had made in football until the senior Spanish team called him up.
“Before I called him to tell him, they already told him. She started crying, I was so happy for her too and very proud of everything that I do and that I can give it to them,” Samu added to Federation media.
The powerful forward is still assimilating what is happening to him. “I’m living a dream that I still can’t believe. “I’m very grateful, above all, for the opportunity and eager to learn and help the team as much as I can.”
“When they told me the news, I honestly couldn’t believe it. “I was very emotional when I remembered all the moments I have spent to get here, all the efforts,”thrifty
“I appreciate every success I’ve had more. Many times, when things don’t work for you, you tend to forget everything you’ve achieved, but you have to be humble and remember the bad moments, and be thankful to all the people who helped you achieve what I have achieved”, he added.
Samu recalled two references as a forward of the Spanish team, David Villa and Diego Costawith whom he sees many similarities and who he takes as a reference. “I really liked Villa, as did Diego Costa, a player with a lot of drive and a lot of power. I know him. Spain has very good forwards, like now Álvaro (Morata) or Joselu which is included in the selection recently. “I’m very happy to be able to share locker rooms with great footballers,” he said.
On the brink of his debut in the senior team, after shining in goals in the youth ranks of the Spanish national team, Samu set himself the challenge of “continually improving” and “learn from the best to be a better footballer”, with dreams of winning the title as his new teammates did in the previous Nations League and Euro Cup.
“I have many dreams and I discuss them with my family. I hope to win a title with the senior team. I hope I can help the team and continue working so that more opportunities will come,” he said.
