Repsol and Toyota renew their agreement for the Dakar

The collaboration between Repsol and Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) takes on a new dimension where both companies They will work together to develop specific products for high competition, such as renewable fuel and renewable lubricant. An agreement began in 2024 with the Dakar Rally and by 2025 it will occupy the whole World Rally Raids 2025, which includes five World Cup events, including the upcoming Dakar 2025.

This annual event with desert and adventure, which will take place from January 3 to 17 in Saudi Arabia, will once again have the presence of Repsol thanks to its technological alliance with the Japanese manufacturer, one of the main candidates for victory.

Both companies share a joint long-term vision when looking for technological and innovative solutions that contribute to the decarbonization of high competition. Thanks to this common goal and the fact to rely on a key partner for Repsol in one of the most demanding competitions on the planet, The colors of the Spanish multi-energetic company will have a presence on the cars of the Brazilian Lucas Moraes –co-driven by Armand Monleón– and the American Seth Quintero – accompanied by Dennis Zenz–.

Racing at the highest level has always been the best setting for Repsol as a test bed for its technological development projects. For the multi-energy company, proving and improving the performance of its products in the world’s fiercest competition is the natural way to bring renewable fuels to the streets as a solution for future mobility. Not in vain, Repsol has started using renewable fuels in Toyota in competition from 2021 with the Repsol Rally Team and Isidre Esteve.

Long-term technology agreement

The new agreement between Toyota Gazoo Racing and Repsol will allow engineers and scientists at the Repsol Technology Lab to have an engine from the Japanese manufacturer. This is a demonstration of the shared will that Repsol and Toyota need to evolve towards new products that are more efficient and have the same performance, such as renewable fuel and renewable lubricant. In 2025, the fuel used by Toyota Gazoo Racing cars will contain 70% of materials of renewable origin, and the goal is to continue this evolution and reach 100% renewable content, developing a quality that gasoline, whose characteristics, in addition to offering optimal performance , they guarantee the proper care of the car’s engine.

Repsol’s relationship with the Dakar celebrates several decades in which at least seven outright victories have been obtained between the car and motorcycle categories, with drivers such as Nani Roma, Marc Coma, Stéphane Peterhansel and Luc Alphand who wearing its colors. A past that also found a relationship between Repsol and Toyota in the early ’90s, when Repsol was twice proclaimed World Rally Champion with Carlos Sainz and the legendary Toyota Celica.

Repsol is the only company in Spain and Portugal that has a plant fully dedicated to the production of renewable fuels on an industrial scale and is located in Cartagena. The new plant has the capacity to produce 250,000 tons of renewable fuels per year from waste such as used oil. These renewable fuels can be used in airplanes, boats, buses, trucks, motorcycles or cars. Renewable fuels are one of the main levers of Repsol’s strategy to accelerate the decarbonization of transportation and become a net zero emissions company by 2050. Today, Repsol has 600 service stations that already supply 100 % Nexa Diesel renewable throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
