Fernando Alonso has not hidden that his greatest desire remains to continue competing in Formula 1 but, above all, to fight for a World Championship with Aston Martin. The Asturian driver continues to be excited about the future that awaits him with the British team, which is trying in every way to improve the performance of its cars with the aim of placing itself among the best on the grid. However, Alonso remains aware that there is still a lot to do to be at the top.
In an interview with the BBC, the Asturian admitted that the next 2025 season will be a “very difficult one”. However, Alonso emphasized that the 2026 season aims to be his “only chance” to achieve his long-awaited goal at Aston Martin, precisely in his final year of contract with the British team.
“I keep dreaming. Why not? I know that maybe 2026 is my only chance because 2025 is very difficult, but I keep dreaming,” he said. “F1 is for dreamers, probably, because anything can happen. We’ll see.”
For the Spanish driver, the 2026 season aims to be key, due to the new signing of Adrian Newey, whose influence on the design of the new car will start to be noticed from that year, and with the change of regulations, a new new space to put Aston Martin in the Formula 1 ointment.
“Expectations will be high because it’s a new car, a change in regulations, a car that Adrian has built [Newey]. This is probably my last season in F1, because my contract expires at the end of 2026. It’s time for fulfillment and the moment of truth. “There are a lot of expectations,” Alonso said of the former Red Bull engineer’s arrival at Aston Martin.
Tomorrow should still be resolved
On the other hand, Alonso also spoke to the BBC about what the future holds for him when his Aston Martin contract ends, and when that happens, the Asturian will be 45 years old, easily becoming the oldest driver on the grid. And despite staying in good shape and motivated to keep driving, the Spaniard knows the time will come when he will have to step aside.
“If I feel like I’m slower than my peers or slower than I think the car has to offer, if that date comes, I’ll probably throw up my hand and stop driving because I’m not going to- enjoy,” said Alonso, who left. the door is open to continue the Great Circus after 2026.
“If 2026 goes well and we’re happy and there’s a possibility of competing for another year, I’ll be open to it. I’m not going to close the door, but I don’t want to think about it either. And I’m going to approach every race as if it’s already the last and will enjoy every second.
