“Sixteen years ago I woke up dreaming and I haven’t slept since,” Sauerbrunn wrote on social media. “That makes it sound easy, but it was never easy. But I would still do it again. It’s not goodbye. I’ll be around. I love this sport too much to leave it forever. But for the first time in sixteen years I’ll find a moment of silence and close my eyes for a while,” she wrote.
“Being able to wear the US Soccer badge is an honor and a privilege for which I will be forever grateful. The fact that I have done it over 200 times is truly humbling.”
