Catalan Alba Riera, 16 years old, won the gold medal this Saturday at the World Trial Championship held in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), where Madrid-born Vera Barón took the second position.
Riera, a native of Vic (Barcelona) and current champion of the Spanish Cup in the modality, won with 210 points, ten more than Barón, 20 years old.
The bronze medal went to German Nina Reichenbach, who defended the world crown, with 180 points, ahead of Czech Eliska Hribkova and French Nina Vabre, the International Cycling Union (UCI) reported on its website.
In his second season in the top category, Riera had a solid performance in his five rides that gave him the rainbow jersey, after last Wednesday’s semi-final he qualified in third position, behind Barón, second, and Reichenbach .
The day was completed by a Spanish triplet in the Elite 20” category, where Alejandro Montalvo, 24, of Madrid reaffirmed his title won last year, ahead of Borja Conejos, also from Madrid, silver, and the Catalan Eloi Palau, bronze.
In the Elite 26” category, Alava’s Julen Saenz de Ormijanafue was fourth, in a race won by British Jack Carthy.’
These victories are among those achieved by Riojan cyclist Travis Asenjo, who was proclaimed yesterday, Friday, trial world champion in the junior category.
