He Sports of Portugal announced this Thursday the departure of its coach, João Pereira, less than a month and a half after taking over the position following the departure of Ruben Amorimand its replacement by Rui Borgesuntil now coach of Vitória SC.
The club announced its decision to terminate the contract Pereira and its technical team in a statement sent after midnight to the Portuguese Securities and Exchange Commission (CMVM, in Portuguese).
He also posted a tweet with a picture of Pereiraaccompanied by the message “a lion forever. Thank you, João Pereira.”
Earlier this Thursday, Sporting informed the CMVM of Borges’ contract until June 2026, with the possibility of extending it until 2027, for 4.1 million euros.
Pereira40, left the green and white bench after adding three wins in eight games: at the weekend, the ‘lions’, who have held the lead since the start of the league, were overtaken by Benfica.
Borges lands at Sporting ahead of next Sunday’s Lisbon derby at Alvalade. Benfica currently has 38 points and Sporting, 37.
43 years old, the new coach of the ‘lions’ is a former player in teams such as Braganza, Mirandela and Moreirense. As a coach he was in Mirandela, his hometown team, Moreirense and Vitória SC, among others.
This leaves Vitória sixth in the league standings with 23 points.
