After weeks of rumours, the Plymouth Argyle This Tuesday is the march of Wayne Rooneywhereupon the Championship club agreed to sack him as coach. The former Manchester United and Everton striker has been in charge for just over seven months.
Rooney replaced Ian Foster in May on a three-year contract. However, the team has had problems under his leadership, not winning away from home this season and last with 18 points from 23 games, four points away from safety. Rooney managed 25 games in all competitions before his departure. It is the second setback for Rooney in 2024 following his sacking as Birmingham City coach in January.
“First team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will lead the team for our championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day,” Plymouth announced in a statement. Rooney, for his part, added: “Plymouth Argyle will always have a special place in my heart and I will remain attentive and interested in their results.”
