Rafa Marquez returns to Barcelona

Date:

The Mexican coach, who won four league titles and two Champions League titles with the Barça club as a player, will manage the subsidiary to replace Sergi Barjuan

Pending a signing that excites Barcelona fans, with Pole Robert Lewandowski as a priority target, Barca will have to settle for minor problems for now. The latter, confirmation that Rafa Marquez will return to the club to take over Barca B, which will be called Barca Atlètic, from next season, to replace Sergi Barjuan.

The Mexican and the Argentine Javier Mascherano, two legends of Barça, were already the main candidates last year for President Joan Laporta to take over the subsidiary of Barça, but given the difficulties in concluding some of these contracts, he turned to Sergi, who is now off the bench at the Johan Cruijff stadium but is still attached to the technical staff of the Catalan club.

The former Spain international was part of the basic structure as Jose Ramón Alexanko’s second but agreed to take charge of the second team last season and even stepped down and led the first team after Ronald Koeman’s departure and before Xavi Hernandez arrived. He’s only been on the star bench for three games, with a win and two draws, but the culé management thanks him for his courage and the way he manages the dressing room in those turbulent times.

Like Sergi, Márquez has a priori good relationship with Xavi Hernández. At the age of 43, the former Aztec defender, 148 international of his country and present at five World Cups, returns to a club where he remained between 2003, with Laporta as president, and 2010 and has won four league titles, two Champions, one Club World Cup and a Copa del Rey, as well as four Spanish Super Cups and a European Super Cup.
