The former Wimbledon finalist, Nick Kyrgioswas unexpectedly included in Australia’s squad for their Davis Cup match against Sweden at the end of the month.
The 29-year-old was picked by the captain Lleyton Hewitt with world number eight Alex de Minaur, Jordan Thompson and Thanasi Kokkinakis in Australia’s line-up for the clash in Stockholm on January 31 and February 1.
Kyrgios’ inclusion in the group of Dav Cupes may allow him to revive his doubles partnership with Kokkinakis, with whom he won the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open three years ago. The last time he played in the Davis Cup was in November 2019.
Kyrgios was selected despite having physical problems from 2022 due to knee, foot and wrist injuries, while his participation in the Australian Open, which starts on Sunday, remains uncertain after his recent sets of defeat at last week’s Brisbane International against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
“I think I almost need a miracle and I need the stars to align for my wrist to safely endure a Grand Slam,” he said after last Tuesday’s loss.
