It’s been ten years since the attack on the satirical magazine’s headquarters, which killed twelve people and shocked France.
The special issue has been released on newsstands to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the attack and already proclaims the slogan on the cover:Indestructible!“.
In its 32 pages -a double edition- it contains a editorial signed by the directorRiss, which acknowledges that “the causes of the drama” the publication “also” experienced are still present, “as is the determination” of the magazine’s staff. In the article he refers to deterioration of the geopolitical situationbecause “Russia and China do not hide their ambition to fight democratic values with the same fanaticism and determination as Islamist terrorist organizations such as Daesh or Al Qaeda.”
In this context, he states that the magazine’s first mission after the attack was to “survive” because “If Charlie sank and disappeared, the terrorists won“.
Faced with the complex and uncertain situation facing the world, the publication supports in the editorial “the desire to laugh”, as “laughter, irony and caricatures are expressions of optimism.”
“No matter what happens, whether it’s dramatic or cheerful, the desire to laugh will never go away,” he says.
President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will lead the tribute to the victims of the attack in front of the publication’s former headquarters.
They also take part in another tribute to a police officer killed by the perpetrators of the attack on Charlie Hebdo while they were on the run, and a third to the victims of an attack on a Jewish supermarket in Paris (four murdered and four seriously injured in January 9 of the same year).
Macron has warned that terrorism remains “a major risk in our societies,” so there should be “no relaxation” in preventive surveillance.
“There must be no ceasefire in the fight against terrorism,” he declared during his speech to the annual conference of French ambassadors gathered at the Elysee Palace.
Coincidentally, the trial of the six suspects in the September 2020 Islamist attack on the former headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, which seriously injured two, has begun before the Paris Criminal Court.
The first hours of the trial focused on whether it should take place behind closed doors, as lawyers for three defendants had requested because they were minors at the time of the events, and ultimately the judges decided that the hearings would be public.
The main suspect is Zaheer Mahmood, 29, who went to the entrance of the building occupied by Charlie Hebdo until 2015 (since then the editorial office has been in an undisclosed location) and attacked two employees of another company who were smoking with a butcher’s machete. on the street
Mahmood is accused of attempted terrorist murder and bringing together criminals of a terrorist nature, a charge that hangs over the other five suspects, who, according to the Public Prosecution Service, supported and encouraged his attack.
The attack took place on September 25, 2020, exactly when the trial of the accomplices to the attack that the publication suffered in January 2015 was taking place, and for that reason Charlie Hebdo had republished the Mohammed cartoons.
The six suspects are from the same region of Pakistan. The process will be completed on January 24.
