The MD bivouac: Paella and churros in the desert

Date:

Yesterday was a rest day Dakar. But for journalists, this is always the busiest day, a day where you must take advantage of the fact that many competitors and vehicles are in the bivouac to gather reports to write in the rest. All morning we are chasing legendary cars from the category of Classicsjewels on wheels hidden in the kilometers of bivouac, in the sand, that we had to travel under the sun.

We did this after tasting churros that a colleague got through some local friends he made at the bonfire in front of the dining room, a place to shelter from the cold of Ha’il, which we now leave behind to start heading south of the country.. Those men, who work for the organization, suggested that we ride in their car to see Ha’il in the evening. Two of us ventured out and ended up in a place they never imagined: in ‘Churrería Marbella’owned by a Saudi trade advisor who has the same business in the city on the Costa del Sol.

Mohamed, the owner, arrived the next day with his churros at the bivouac to distribute them to the teams, drivers and, above all, try one of his delicacies on the local idol, Yazeed Al -Rajhi.

A Spaniard from the bivouac told us a remarkable experience from the day we slept at the hotel. He went out to find a taxi. A man saw her and said he would take her to a restaurant. Be trustworthy. When he got there, he asked her what she wanted in the letter. He ordered, paid, and went to the car. He tells her that he will wait for her there, but after a while he gets tired and goes into the restaurant to chat. On the way back, he took her back to the hotel, congratulated her and left. The Spaniard was amazed. For most of the dinner he was debating whether to run or not. Why did that man do that? “Generosity,” the friends responded warmly.

Ha’il, where we were yesterday, according to our new travel companions, is the “most generous” place. According to them, “the most generous man lived there, thousands of years ago,” who, despite having nothing to feed his children, seeing a woman in the same situation, decided to give her the only horse he had to do it. feed him to his family. Always according to our friends, they know that they should be generous to those in need, and also to foreigners. Without asking for anything in return.

“I’m sure the man who bought her dinner went home happy and I know God will repay him”said one of the children. “My brother is 3 years old, I bought him a chocolate bar the other day. When he came home, our sister asked him for some. I told him that he should give it to me and when he asks for something -what. should do it and be proud of doing it.” And they emphasize: “and when you return to your country, you will also speak well of us.”

A paella that tastes like heaven

at noon, Nandu Jubany, along with KH-7, as well as Juan Morera and Lidia Rubathey delighted about 100 people with paella with shrimp and an important appetizer in the middle of the bivouac. Even people from the organization joined, improvised, as well as Edgar Canet, Nani Roma, Jordi Viladoms, Àlex Haro, Eduardo Pons, Jaume Betriu, Isidre Esteve and the Repsol Toyota Rally Team, and many others. Amazing.

But the best is the intrastory. After completing stage 5, Nandu did not rest despite the difficulty of reaching the finish line after the first week of racing.: He buys cuttlefish, peppers, shrimps and onions in a supermarket in the city, because the next day, Friday, is a weekly holiday in Arabia and everything is closed. Food was a blessing when strength was lacking. The cold is getting stronger, the back hurts from sleeping on the floor and the few hours of sleep are heavy. Only one week left. Now we will move towards Ad Duwadimi.
