Bivouac by MD: “In the middle of nowhere”

Date:

We happily promised each other when we left Hail. We are leaving the north of the country and that means forgetting about the cold. But in Riyadh The worst awaits us. I was suffering from a bad flu season and asked the journalists to sleep in the press room. However, we quickly realized that it was worse in that room than outside. It’s a freezer. I slept on the floor, with two scarves over my face, curled up in a sack.

The next morning, I had to ask for help to open the zipper. The night will die. I woke up feeling nauseous and then I had a fever. At the next bivouac, at HaradI lay down on the floor again to sleep for 5 hours straight, until midnight, praying that I would recover and be able to write.

I can not my soul. I went to Nani Roma’s doctor, Pim Terricabrasand the medical center. And many people are interested in helping me. That’s how he is Dakar. When someone needed help, everyone raised their hands.

The next day, recovered, we went to Shubaytahin it ‘Empty Quarter’, the largest sand desert in the world. We reached a military railway in the middle of the dunes. The captain of the plane told us: “I will do a maneuver to reposition the plane to make a safe landing because the runway is short.”. And immediately after, the landing is more aggressive than normal, but effective.

When I came down, the image was shocking. A military airport in the middle of the desert. On either side, sand and more sand. And on the horizon, only dunes. There we boarded the bus, and after about 10 minutes of driving on a road built between the dunes, we arrived at the esplanade of the bivouac, again between sand and more sand, in the middle of nowhere, where this Friday the Dakar. A unique place,
