Guardiola’s prediction after Haaland renews at City: “It depends on him”

Date:

Pep Guardiola, coach of Manchester City, has assured that Erling Haaland will not rest now that he has signed a new contract and that the striker is a great competitor who could break the Premier League goals record.

The Norwegian striker renewed his contract with City until 2034, seven years longer than the contract he had in place which expired in 2027. This new agreement, which will keep him at the club until the age of 33 , puts him on track to surpass the record goal of Alan Shearer in the English competition at 260. Haaland is currently 79.

“If he continues with these numbers, yes (he will overcome it). It depends on him and the team, but this is extraordinary news for the club,” Guardiola said in a press conference on Friday.

“A test of trust”

“He wants to show how much he likes it here, if he doesn’t renew for one or two years. In ten years, a lot of things can change, but it’s a test of trust between him and the club. You can’t know what will happen, but “The club knows how professional he is and the talent he has. This is what he wants. He is still young and with the maturation of playing more games he is better,” said Pep.

As for the possible satisfaction now that his future is secured, Guardiola believes it is not possible and that Haaland is motivated to win the next game and keep scoring goals.

“I don’t feel that he can go to sleep now that he has signed this contract. He is a great competitor. He loves the club, the people around him, the Premier League and living here with his family. I imagine he will feel that there is no better place for him in the next ten years,” said Guardiola, who for his part renewed his contract at City until 2027 in November.
