The Polish tennis player was punished for testing positive to trimetazidinea drug used to treat angina pectoris that is regulated in Poland and comes from a trusted pharmacy in that country. WADA includes this substance a list of banned substances in 2024 due to their supposed improvement in heart function and resistance in athletes.

The world number two and French Open champion, however, received a one-month suspension in an out-of-competition event in August 2024, according to International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

The player was temporarily suspended from September 22 to October 4missing three tournaments, which count towards the sanction, so she has eight days left,” the statement said. In addition, the tennis player will lose the financial prize obtained at the Cincinnati Open.

“After a thorough examination, WADA will not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case of Polish tennis player Iga Swiątek“, said today’s statement from the World Anti-Doping Agency. “WADA’s scientific experts confirmed that the specific hypothesis of contaminated melatonin, presented by the athlete and accepted by the ITIA, is plausible and that there are no scientific reasons to challenge it. TAD is new,” he added.

Finally, the agency added that “seek the advice of an outside attorney” and it “thought that the explanation of the athlete’s contamination was well proven.” Therefore, WADA, finally, will not appeal the case of possible doping by Iga Swiatek.
