Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), current world champion, led the Monte Carlo Rallythe first test of the WRC season, after the first three special stages held on Thursday evening.
The Belgian was just two seconds ahead of the Welsh runner-up Elfyn Evans (Toyota). The eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogierwho this year returned to participate in a partial program at Toyota, was third, 12.8 seconds behind the leader. Ogier leads the way Ott Tänakoccupying fourth position, twenty-seven seconds behind the head.
Author of the best early afternoon scratch times, Ogier lost almost fifteen seconds in the final special of the day after a driving error. In fact, the damage could have been greater, as he narrowly avoided leaving the road.
The two-time world champion Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota), who returns full-time to the elite this weekend after partially putting his rally career aside last year, occupies a provisional sixth position, some 44 seconds behind Neuville.
