Elliot Morris on “The Gaffer” who shaped his career in the Irish League

Date:

It’s “forgiving” that Elliot Morris hailed as the best manager I’ve ever worked with at Glentoran.

And play a little.

Legendary goalkeeper Maurice – who announced his retirement last week – played under 10 coaches while at the Oval.

But there is one person who stands out from the group and that is the older one who brought him to Mercy Street in 2002.

Roy Coyle signed with Morris after returning from West Bromwich Albion, thus starting a career in the Irish League that spanned two decades.

Morris says it was Coyle’s straightforward approach that he loved when he got back from England.

A retired stopper told Belfast Live’s That What I Call Football podcast: “I came home and two weeks later Roy Coyle called me and asked if I wanted to sign. The rest is history.

“He was very loyal. The conversation was the way I liked it. He was loyal and open.

“I guess I didn’t understand what I was about to get involved in. I’d talk to him and say, ‘Yes Roy’ and ‘Thank you Roy’ and all that. What I left here.”

“But he is amazed. He has won everything he needs to win so many times. He has more than 50 medals as a winner and playing under him has been an amazing experience and he is probably the best coach I have ever played with.”
