This 69-year-old resident of La Alberca faces two to four years in prison for ramming the Murcian cyclist and his companions and fleeing

The 69-year-old resident of La Alberca, who last Saturday ran over cyclist Alejandro Valverde and his friend Pedro Moya on the RM-560 connecting Alcantarilla and Javalí Viejo, is still detained in the cells of the national police station in Murcia, waiting to to go to court on Monday. This person, who was driving the vehicle that deliberately rammed into the Movistar team rider and his companions, turned himself in at the local Murcia police station in La Alberca on Saturday afternoon.

The detainee could face a prison term of two to four years if he is confirmed to have fled the scene of the accident, following the tightening of penalties for drivers in the event of collisions with pedestrians and cyclists approved in February 2019.

According to eyewitnesses to the incident, a motorist driving along the RM-560 road and just closing the Valverde “group” was the one who followed the car and noted the license plate. This was key for the driver to show up at the police station of his own free will and turn himself in, just hours after he ran over the legendary Murcian cyclist.

According to what Alejandro Valverde’s companions told, the alleged aggressor stopped his vehicle on the track after the insults thrown at him by the group of cyclists, complaining that he had passed by his side at high speed and did not respect the prescribed one and a half meters away. Then the driver backed up and accelerated to run over Valverde and Moya, according to the version eyewitnesses had offered.

With everything in “a fright”, as Valverde himself noted on his Instagram account, “El Bala” will be ready to return to training in a few days with his thoughts focused on his final participation in the Vuelta a España. Valverde, who was treated on the tarmac for the first time by the health personnel who attended the outcry, has only bruises, as the doctors determined after performing a scanner and an MRI on him Saturday in Arrixaca. In the middle of the afternoon, he returned to his home in the Montepinar urbanization and rested with his family. Soon he will get back on his bike.
