Released on detainee charge of running over Alejandro Valverde

The magistrate explains in the car that there are indications of a possible crime against road safety, injuries and leaving the scene of the accident

The man arrested for running over Alejandro Valverde and his companions last Saturday in Alcantarilla, on the road connecting the municipality to Javali Viejo (Murcia), was released on Monday with charges. The 69-year-old detainee went to court yesterday morning to testify before the acting chief of investigating judge number 3 of Murcia.

According to sources from the TSJ of the Region of Murcia, the accused is obliged to appear when summoned by the court hearing the case and in any case on the 1st and 15th of each month. The magistrate explains in the warrant that while there is evidence of a possible road safety offense, injuries and leaving the scene of the accident, it is not appreciated that the requirements that pre-trial detention (risk of escape, concealment or destruction would justify) of evidence or the prevention of criminal repetition). The judge also authorized the intervention of the vehicle he was driving and the withdrawal of the driver’s license as a precaution.

The person, who was driving the vehicle that deliberately rammed into the Movistar team rider and his companions, turned himself in to the local Murcia police station in La Alberca on Saturday afternoon. Since then he stayed in the dungeons of the National Police in Murcia.

Fortunately, the outcry was a shock. Alejandro Valverde, who was transferred to Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital, was not seriously injured. During the afternoon, after undergoing several examinations, he was discharged and has since recovered at home.

The lawyer who is defending the suspect for running over the group of cyclists Alejandro Valverde rode in on Saturday assured that his client was driving his car that morning, accompanied by his wife and sister-in-law, and denied the intent of his action. “He did not hesitate to attack them and there are witnesses who can confirm it,” lawyer Ariane Santiago said yesterday, after going to the City of Justice of Murcia where her client is before the head of the Court of Instruction number 3 stated, act as a guard.

“He wants to call on the media to tell his version of what happened. After spending 45 hours in police custody, he is now physically and mentally unwell. Everything that happens to him overcomes him,” he explained.

Santiago explained that they have requested the “habeas corpus” procedure – requiring him to appear immediately in front of a judge to decide whether or not the arrest should be extended – given that it was disproportionate to his high age and the lack of a police station. “He’s a good man,” he said.

According to the lawyer, her client would want to speak to Valverde and the rest of the injured, “because he was sorry; It wasn’t his intention,” he says.

The 69-year-old man, a resident of the Murcian neighborhood of La Ñora, denounced receiving death threats through social networks and denied that he had stated before the accident “to wish for the death of cyclists, as has been published in some media”, concluded the lawyer.
