Young Klavzar completes UCAM Murcia roster

Date:

The Slovenian point guard, 18 years old and from Real Madrid, becomes the third baseman of a practically made team

UCAM has three more signings to make official or at least wrap up in order to bring those more than a few coming to fruition. But only one identity was known of the squad of thirteen players from his first team with whom Sito Alonso will start next season in the Endesa League and the Champions League. And yesterday it was revealed: Urban Klavzar (Ljubljana, 2004), a six-foot-tall point guard from Real Madrid’s academy, will be the final puzzle piece he completes as a third baseman and fifth local training quota to compete in Europe.

And despite his age, projection and club of origin, Klavzar did not come to Murcia on loan from Real Madrid, but was owned by UCAM, who signed him on a one-season contract with the option of extending it to two more. In the minds of the player and his agents, an NBA who still doesn’t have him under their radar, but who, if he enjoys the space to play at UCAM, as intended, will show up in time in the forecasts for the following ‘concepts’

Turning eighteen a month and a half ago, Klavzar is playing his first season as a senior in Murcia, although he has already played in EBA competition for the past two years with the subsidiary of Real Madrid, forming an explosive pair of game leaders. with a Juan Núñez, to average 15.3 points per game.

Arriving in Madrid in the summer of 2018, his training in his country took place at Helios Suns with which he caught the attention of the Spanish youth basketball team in the VM Develops de Bellpuig (Lleida) cadet tournament, where his team came in second , he was the top scorer and named MVP, with a memorable 38-point performance in the semi-final against Joventut. Real Madrid then invited him to visit the facilities and after the U-16 Eurobasket he played against Slovenia, in which Klavzar once again shone as a year younger than most players, he was convinced of his signing.

Small in stature, but with a very powerful chassis to absorb penetrating contacts and legs, allowing him to soar much higher than other players of his size, Klavzar is a player who considers himself highly capable and who, if he remains physically mature, will could alternate the ‘1’ and ‘2’ in his career as he has a clear scoring instinct and a wide range of resources to generate his own shots after the bounce. But for now he is a base and becomes the apprentice of Tomás Bellas, also trained in the white quarry.

The moment of greatest media interest of his career came in December last year, when the Euroleague Real Madrid denied a reprieve amid the Covid-19 outbreak and had to bring in a host of homegrown players. Klavzar was pivotal in the win that day against CSKA (71-65) and surprised with a cheek that scored 10 points.
