The Catalan Paralympic marathon Elena Congost, with visual disabilities, announced that she has cancer and that, although she prepares her return to the competition with her new guide, Roger Sans, she “turns a little to look after himself, look at her and continue.”
Congost has been one of the best Paralympic athletes in recent years. In 2024 it was not qualified after becoming third in the marathon of the Parish Paralympic Games for the rope release that linked it to its guide a few meters from the end line. The decision of the for World Athletics was considered “unfair” by the Paralympic Committee of Spain and for the reason that an extraordinary adoption was granted.
Throughout the process of adapting to his new guide, Roger Sans, the athlete revealed that he was suffering from cancer that would force him to temporarily leave competitions.
“I live another kind of career because it’s in a complex moment of health. Sometimes we talk about illnesses, cancer, and seemingly taboo, but it’s common. It’s time to get away a little, take care of yourself, expect and continue,” he said in the ‘Esport Club’ program of Catalan Autonomic Television Sport 3.
“As it takes food, nutrition and rest to the whole, we are not people where these things may not happen to us. But we can decide how to deal with these situations and I will make it strong, push and the support of all those around me,” said the athlete, gold medal in the marathon in London 2012.
