The Olympic and world champion of the 400 meters, the Bahamian Steven Gardinerwill not defend his world champion title in Eugene (Oregon, United States of America) due to inflammation of the tendon.
“Instead of putting on my spikes, I was advised to wear a walking boot,” Gardiner said in an Instagram post. “Destroyed by the news, but thankful for all the blessings in my career so far,” he added.
The World Championships begin in Eugene on Friday with several last -minute casualties, including Olympic women’s marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir, who will not be able to enter the event due to a right hip injury.
Gardiner, who also took silver at the 2017 Worlds, is the fifth fastest 400m athlete of the year and won the race last month. Paris Diamond League.
