The Ukrainian championship will begin on August 23 despite the Russian invasion, announced today Vadym Gutzeit, Minister of Youth and Sports. The battles will be played on Ukrainian territory, but there are no spectators and the designated security regulations are strictly respected.
“During airstrikes the battles will be delayed and the players, coaches and staff will have to move quickly to a shelter,” Gutzeit announced.
Much of the sports infrastructure was damaged by attacks by Vladimir Putin’s troops and many foreign players fled Ukrainian territory after the Russian invasion began on February 24th.
No games since December
Last season, the Ukrainian championship, which as every year enters its winter break in December, was discontinued due to the Russian invasion and on April 26 it was definitely suspended by the decision of the football authorities, who agreed to leave the title invalid despite the fact that Shakhtar Donetsk were the leader at the break.
