Dragan Skocic returns as Iran coach from this Sunday after being dismissed on Monday. This was reported by Ehsan Osuli, spokesman of the Iranian Football Federation. After a meeting of the board of directors of the said Federation and of the technical committee, Skocic was reinstated in his position.
Skocic’s dismissal has drawn intense criticism to Iranian fans, just four months before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Iran are in the said final stage in group B and will debut against England on November 21, before facing Wales and the United States.
The Croatian coach, 53 years old and with a contract until 2023, will continue to prepare Iran’s sixth appearance in the World Cup and third in a row.
His dismissal was due to the defeat he suffered in June in a friendly against Algeria (1-2 on June 12) and speculation about the divisions among the players and their criticism of the coach. Ali Daei, Javad Nekounam, Amir Ghalenoi and Afshin Ghotbi they rang to replace him.
