the man from Salamanca Mario García Romo, fourth in the 1,500 final of the Eugene World Cup (United States), was “very happy” with his performance and assured that, as he has with other athletes, he hopes to “inspire the next generation” of Spanish runners.
Mario García Romo’s fourth place with 3:30.20, which lowered his personal record by more than five seconds, is the third best Spanish record in history.
“I do not believe. Spain is in a good moment, in a sweet moment for the 1,500, and I hope that it inspires all the children from the lower categories who do athletics. When I grew up, I saw great athletes and now I want to be an inspiration to the next generation,” said the 25-year-old Spanish athlete, after completing the final of the 1,500.
García Romo was just overtaken at the finish line by Australian Jake Wightman, gold in 3:29.23, beating the Olympic champion, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:29.47). Third is the Spaniard Mohamed Katir (3:29.90)
“It cost me more to do that time than fourth place in the world. Making that time was amazing. The training sessions were great but that time was exceptional. All the work done is worth it and the results are there. It shows that if you work hard and believe in your coach you can achieve a lot. Now soon we have the European and it will be like a World Cup, really,” he concluded.
