Naomi Osakawinner of four Grand Slams and former world number one, was dispensed to his coach, Wim Fissettewho has been with him since 2019, as reported on Thursday by the technician himself in his social networks.
“It has been a privilege to coach Naomi since 2019 and watch her grow into a champion.. He has inspired a whole new generation to fall in love with the game and speak up for what he believes in,” the Belgian said in an accompanying Instagram post along with a photo with the tennis player.
fissettewho has worked with the likes of Belgium’s Kim Clijsters, Romania’s Simona Halep and Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka, became Osaka’s coach in 2019 after he fired American Jermaine Jenkins seven months after hiring him.
including the Belgians Osaka won the 2020 US Open and 2021 Australian Open titles. However, the 24-year-old tennis player has not competed since last May after suffering an Achilles tendon injury that ruled him out of Wimbledon.
Before Jenkins, Osaka also worked in German Sascha Banjinknown for being the coach of the American Serena Williams (2008-2015), the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (2015-16), the American Sloane Stephens (2016) and the Danish Caroline Wozniacki (2017).
Naomi Osaka, the daughter of a Haitian-American father and a Japanese mother, plays in international competitions for Japan.
It is not known who will replace Fissette as coach of the Japanese athlete, who has not yet made a public statement on this decision.
