Until Wednesday’s definitive postponement, Varillas dominated 7-6 (3) and 6-5, having to start this Thursday with Bautista, the third favorite, to at least force a decisive thirteenth game.
But Bautista dropped his serve against a Varillas who took advantage of his first match point to advance to the quarterfinals where he will face Austrian Dominic Thiem, who also defeated Argentine Federico Delbonis in a postponement match, 7-6 (6) and 6-3, in one hour and 57 minutes.
Thiem, in his fight to return to the top of the world rankings, from where he is currently far (n.274), suffered in the first round, deciding his side in the decisive thirteenth game.
The second set was easier, decided by two service breaks (third and ninth games).
