Germany awkward removed Austriawhere wood denied him three goals, and qualified for the semifinals of the European Championship for the tenth time in its history (2-0).
The Germans, who hit the woodwork twice, just failed to make the top four of the continental tournament in the 2017 edition. The eight-time champion returns to a round where they lost only in 1993 and is two wins away from his ninth title.
a purpose of Sara Dabritz at 25 minutess chose a match with five shots on the woodwork, three for Austria, who were fortunately denied in front of the goal, and two for Germany, who did not sentence the game until the last minute, when Alexandra Popp, when blocked a ball from Goalkeeper Marina Zinsberger scored the second and final goal.
Germany took advantage of their rival’s defensive errors to silence a team that had started well and there was no tension of favouritism, applied to a Germany that had just signed a perfect group stage. Irene Fuhrmann’s students found hope at the start, where they had two good chances to take the lead. Hickelsberger-Fuller, on a pass over the defense, gets into the area alone, but can only get a shot in the middle, rushing because the Germans are already squeezing him from behind.
But the best was for center Marina Georgieva, with a header from a corner that hit the post.
The German’s only warning came through Popp, with a shot from the top of the penalty area, and they needed a bit of a push from Austria to prevail. The Austrian goalkeeper fumbled the ball out, gave the ball into the middle and the German offensive began. Bühl went for the strength and speed of his pair, winning the baseline and seeking support with a low back pass. Popp, the scorer, knew how to pass the ball and Magull, from the second row, scored inside.
Germany had already secured the prize and it was only a matter of time before more goals fell, as the Austrian defense was conspicuous by its absence. Bühl had the second, thwarted at the near post by a save from Zinsberger, and so was Giulia Gwinn, whose low shot crashed into the woodwork as soon as she left the locker room.
But Germany, instead of sentencing, invited Austria to come up and the Fuhrmann had two other stumbles on wood; a shot by Barbara Dunst onto the crossbar and a shot by Sara Puntingam that hit Frohms and hit the post.
The match was a festival of precision at the posts and the fifth fell to Germany’s account, with a good shot from outside the area by Bühl directly on the crossbar.
Zinsberger completed his black night with one of the most surreal goals of the tournament. Trying to clear a ball, he was met by Popp, who blocked the shot with great luck for Germany that it went into the Austrian goal.
A 2-0 win put Germany back in the semi-finals for the first time since 2013, preventing Austria from repeating their Euro 2017 feat in which they finished third.
Germany’s rival will leave the rivalry between France and the Netherlands this Saturday in Rotherham.
