Leclerc admitted his guilt: "If I keep making mistakes like this I don’t deserve to win the championship"

Date:

“It was a mistake. Nothing special,” said Charles Leclerc with an angry face, rather than disappointment. Angry at himself, not at his car. Or so it seems. Charles took full responsibility for what happened at the French F1 GP, where he left because he went into the wall in the middle of the fight for victory over Max Verstappen.

“It’s been a difficult weekend for me, I’ve had consistency issues and I’ve made a mistake that I shouldn’t have made. I haven’t been good enough. No excuses. All year long I’ve been performing at a great level but if I make these mistakes I don’t deserve to win the championship. Let’s see,” the Monegasque said in remarks to ‘DAZN F1’.

Those words came after the Monegasque launched an exclamation on the radio at the moment of hitting the wall which according to Mattia Binotto was not understood.

Two weeks ago in Austria, Charles Leclerc had a problem with his accelerator pedal, as he could not release it correctly. And coincidentally or not, when his car gets stuck in the barriers, he complains that his accelerator pedal won’t release and he lets out a cry full of pain and sadness. That phrase suggested the accelerator might have been the cause of his accident, but Leclerc said a mea culpa and Binotto, Ferrari’s boss, insisted there was “no problem”.

Binotto clarified the alleged misunderstanding

“No problem. Charles mentioned a problem with the radio but it was a matter of wanting to get out of the way and maybe the engine just didn’t feel right. You have made a real mistake. Sometimes it happens, like sometimes the engine fails,” the boss of Ferrari said about it. I mean, Mattia meant that Charles was just complaining about a post-crash mechanical failure because he couldn’t reverse after hitting the wall because the throttle wouldn’t let go. He wanted to make it clear that the only cause of the accident was pilot error.
