Six of the top Olympic boxers from Cuba will debut as professionals in Mexico, starting next Maywhich will end the ban on rented boxing on the island, thanks to an agreement with the company Golden Ring Promotions.
“It is a privilege to reach this historic agreement with the Cuban sporting authorities to mark before and after boxing.Gerardo Saldívar, president of Golden Ring Promotions, confirmed on Monday, referring to the return of professional boxing to the Caribbean country, after 60 years.
Saldívar appreciated the confidence of the Domadores de Cuba team, which has had many successes in the World Series, and the Cuban Boxing Federation (FCB), and predicted that soon the talents would be added to the ranks of major professional organizations. of boxing.
Cuba won three gold medals in boxing in Munich 1972, along with bantamweight Orlando Martínez, middleweight Emilio Correa and heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson.and since then it has become the main power of amateur boxing, however, its fighters cannot compete as professionals, unless they leave the country and hire their own.
According to a note from Golden Ring Promotions, Alberto Puig, president of FCB, celebrated the agreement.
“Three and a half years ago a serious review began that resulted in the agreement being approved and accepted by the country’s sporting management. and the Cuban Boxing Federation with Golden Ring Promotions, for representing Cuba in its entry into professional boxing, ”Puig said.
The Cuban director explained that the main purpose of the agreement is related to preparing boxers so that they can continue to represent the island, in addition to economic benefit.
“We estimate that six of Cuba’s main Tamers figures, are engaged in six rounds against at least four events this year 2022. The next month of May is being considered for Cuba’s start in professional boxing, ”he added.
The negotiations signal a change in Cuba’s sporting policy that for decades has described professional boxing as inhumane and lacking in principles.
