Alexander Zverev did not lose hope to play with US Open next month, but the German world number two has a better chance of returning to the tour after injuring his ankle at Roland Garros in the group stage of the final of Davis cup in mid-September.
Zverev was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury in his Roland Garros semi-final against Rafa Nadal and underwent surgery for torn ligaments in his right ankle last month.
The 25-year-old has yet to be released for the final Grand Slam of the year, which begins on August 29 on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows in New York.
“Sascha is recovering well and is still hopeful that he will be ready for the US Open. However, it is too early to say whether he will compete there or not,” said a member of his team.
Zverev, the 2020 US Open runner-up (he lost in the final in five sets to Dominic Thiem), recently posted a video on social media of himself walking without crutches.
But the individual Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo is clearly aiming to return to the tour by leading Germany in the group stage of the Davis Cup from September 13-18.
Germany will play its matches in Hamburg, along with France, Belgium and Australia, the other Group C teams. Two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the quarterfinals of this year’s men’s group competition .
