The Double Augusta Bubba Watson Masters Champion is the last player to leave the PGA Tours to join the LIV Golf (Arab Super League). The British newspaper ‘Daily Telegraph’ reports that the two-time green jacket will make his tournament debut on the first weekend of September at The International in Boston. Watson, 43, will captain one of LIV Golf’s four-player teams.
Watson has not competed since late May, after playing for the PGA Championship, ‘major’ where he finished tied for 30th. He then revealed that he had a torn meniscus.
Watson joins other Masters champions now competing in the Super League, such as Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson. LIV Golf now has winners from nine of the last 19 Masters.
“They’re trying to change. They started with women’s golf, they supported it through a series of Aramco events on the Ladies European Tour and then they started with men’s. There are women’s tournaments that they sponsored. They’re trying to grow golf. They’re trying to change the industry there, attract tourism to Saudi Arabia through golf and the beautiful beaches they already have,” Bubba said.
LIV Golf is organizing this year eight closed tournaments with 255 million dollars in prizes. “It would be an honor and a privilege if (the PGA Tour) would let me play there,” Watson added. The PGA Tour has suspended players who signed with LIV Golf, while some have left the US circuit.
