Alcaraz, Umag final against Sinner in his 100th ATP match

Date:

Carlos Alcaraz19, world number 5 and defending champion, will play this Sunday (8:00 pm) in the final of mold everyone is waiting for because it will have the second seed on the other side of the net, the other top-10 of the draw, Jannik Sinner20 years old and 10th in the ranking.

It will be a clash between two youngsters who are already in the elite group in tennis and, therefore, many more matches between the two can be predicted as both have bright futures.

Alcaraz and Sinner will meet for the first time on clay after sharing victories in their two previous encounters: the Spaniard won (7-6, 7-5) in the 2nd round of 2021 Paris Masters 1,000 and the Italian won this year in the round of 16 of Wimbledon by 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3.

The final coincided with the 100th ATP match for the Murcian, who has an impressive record of 75 wins and 24 losses in his first 99 matches at the highest level. His victory in the semifinals match Giulio Zepperi ensured him another jump in the world ranking and on Monday he will catch up with the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and will appear in 4th place.

Carlos suffered a bad right ankle sprain during his match against Zeppieri, but continued to play normally after receiving attention from the physio and hopes it won’t be a problem in the final. “At the moment it’s fine, let’s see tonight or tomorrow morning, but I’m going to say that I’ll be ready for the final,” he said yesterday after finishing his semifinal.

It was the sixth final of the year for Alcaraz, who won the first four innings river, Miami, Barcelona Y Madridand lost the last one on Sunday in hamburgin the view of Lorenzo Musettiso far the only one to have surpassed him in an ATP final.

The Murcian started his record in Umag’2021 and wants to reaffirm the crown to add his sixth title, the seventh if the 2021 ‘Next Gen’ Masters ignored by the official ATP statistics. This year he has 27 wins in 30 matches on clay and an overall balance of 42-6.

The sinner traces that fact from Alcaraz, because he also has five titles and another loss in the final, the only one he played in the Masters 1,000 category, last year in Miami against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz. For the Italian, this is his first final in 2022 after overcoming in Umag the jinx that haunted him this season in the quarterfinals: six defeats in six games played in that round.
