The army and police were in constant use at the border in Burgenland over the weekend. Nearly 600 migrants were registered in one day – the highest number of detentions since the refugee crisis in 2015. More than 160 people smugglers have been caught so far this year.
The stream of refugees flows incessantly. Week after week, the number of arrests has been rising for months. Last Saturday the volume shot up. In just 24 hours, exactly 591 illegal immigrants from Hungary reached Austria.
“This is a new peak value. We have never had so many arrests in one day this year, nor since 2015, the year of the major refugee influx,” says the operations center.
No end in sight
“The tense situation will continue to worsen,” situation observers agree. They expect the number of refugees to continue to rise. “Millions of migrants wait hundreds of miles to the east in camps and shelters to escape. Preparations for this are in full swing. The rush will come,” said a local detective.
The effects of global migration movements have long been felt in this country. 591 attacks in one day, of which 290 only in the hotspots of the Oberpullendorf district, such as Deutschkreutz and Nikitsch – these facts speak for themselves. Many Burgenlanders are particularly shocked by the difficult fate of children from crisis areas.
The care is growing
As reported, more and more minors are finding their way to Austria – all alone. Recently, two Syrian boys, only ten and twelve years old, were found in Nikitsch. Helpers now care for the two in a care facility in Burgenland. An incident in Deutschkreutz also sparked violent reactions. A migrant brutally punched a soldier in the face with his fist.
The fight against organized smuggling crime is progressing successfully. More than 160 perpetrators have already been arrested this year.
Lots of work at the border
It is now a hectic bustle around the tent camp and the first shelter in Nickelsdorf. On Sunday, 300 migrants had to be taken in by the police and all newcomers had to be registered. An official: “From here the asylum seekers are then taken by bus to the federal states and distributed over the existing districts.”
