Four firefighters have been injured in a forest fire in southern France. According to the fire brigade and civil defense, several hundred emergency services and fire-fighting aircraft fought the fire near Aubais, about halfway between Nmes and Montpellier, on Sunday. As a responsible firefighter described to journalists, an emergency vehicle caught fire – four of his colleagues were injured.
One seriously injured was taken to a clinic by helicopter, the other three were taken to another hospital with minor injuries. Strong winds and drought favored the spread of the fire, according to the fire service, more than 350 hectares of vegetation were destroyed in the evening and two houses damaged. A nearby highway was closed in both directions for several hours due to heavy smoke. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin spoke on Twitter of a “violent fire”.
In several other places in the south of the country, the fire brigade also had to extinguish vegetation fires this weekend. Three people, including a firefighter, were slightly injured on Sunday in a fire in Beaucaire, north of Arles. The fire service announced that 15 hectares and two residential buildings had been destroyed.
