Parliamentary elections started on Sunday morning in Finland, a future NATO country. Former Finance Minister Petteri Orpo’s conservative National Coalition Party entered the election as an easy favorite on Sunday. Recently, polls saw her only marginally ahead of the right-wing populist party The Finns and Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s social democrats.
Polling stations in the EU’s northernmost country will remain open until 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CEST). Immediately afterwards, a first trend based on early votes should be published.
The 37-year-old Marin has been the Finnish prime minister since the end of 2019. She leads a centre-left coalition of five parties. The leader of the party receiving the most votes in Finnish elections usually gets the first chance to form a new government.
