Kerry star David Clifford paid tribute to Sligo’s Red Og Murphy after he inspired United with a convincing 3-1: 0-13 victory for United Sunday in the Division 1 Final at Croke Park.
Clifford, who scored 1-6, including a superb solo goal, expressed his condolences to the family of Red Og, who died suddenly on Friday in a post-match appearance.
The crowd from Croke Park responded with thunderous applause when Clifford said, “I just want to congratulate all the members of the Kerry J.A. Red O’Ghage Murphy family at Sligo.
“We were all fortunate to see the Red Og play the Sigerson Cup (cup) this year and we all saw what he could do, so we send our best wishes to the family at Kerry GAA.”
He was honored after Murphy’s tragic death at the age of 21.
He attended elementary school in DCU and was a talented prospect, playing for the Curry GAA Club, Highway with Slaigo and his college. He also spent eight months playing Australian bases with North Melbourne in 2019.
Sligo County Councilman Martin Connolly, Jarre Murphy, told the Irish Mirror that the local community was “shattered” and “speechless” when they gathered to support his family.
Society is ruined here. He brought the parish to Sligo, the parish in which he played, the community is completely devastated.
I said the word without saying a word, people walking in confusion, not knowing what happened.
“Our sympathy is what we can do to show sympathy to her father and mother, Geraldine and Redmond, and her two brothers.
“The community has been meeting here for a long time. There are ten or 15 people in the middle of the community, cleaning up and preparing for the events that will happen in the next couple of days.”
