Northern Ireland defender Shane Ferguson admitted it was an “exciting” experience to win the silver medal at Wembley, the home of English football’s cult.
Ferguson made an unforgettable impact off the bench when he scored the final goal in Rotterham United’s 4-2 victory over Sutton United in the Papa John Cup final.
After helping Miller deliver the first Football League Cup since 1996, the 30-year-old said: “It’s an incredible feeling.
“Come here and win in front of your family, friends and all the fans – it’s a great and exciting day too.
“For me there, the Wembley final. It’s just a really cool, fun day.”
Ferguson, who played 54 games for Northern Ireland, was sent off just 10 minutes before the end of the regular season and Rotterham lost 2-1.
Ferguson added that the change of form helped balance the match in favor of the first-league team: “Maybe we had more legs.
“Sutton looked a little tired and we changed the lineup when needed. Just press things. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Luckily it happened.
“For me, scoring a goal at Wembley is unbelievable.”
